As a dermatological medical assistant, your role involves working with a dermatologist to provide care to patients with skin, hair, and nail conditions. Your responsibilities include clinical, administrative, and patient education tasks. Here is a more detailed breakdown of your role and responsibilities:


  1. Clinical responsibilities:

    • Greet and prepare patients for examinations by reviewing.

      1. Name and DOB

      2. Medications

      3. Allergies

      4. Insurance information

      5. Medical history

      6. Current symptoms

      7. Reason for visit

      8. MIPs

    • Escort patients to and from examination rooms.

    • Assist the provider in procedures such as skin biopsies, excisions, laser treatments, and other dermatological procedures.

    • Administer topical medications, injections, and other medications as directed by the provider.

    • Document patient information (scribe), update medical charts, take photos, and ensure accuracy and completeness of medical records.

    • Watch patients for signs of adverse reactions to medications or treatments and report them to the provider while patient is on premises.

    • Facilitate lab/specimen pickups as needed.

    • Draw up medications as needed for surgeries, procedures, or biopsies.

    • Wipe down the exam room after each patient using Cavi wipes and/or Cavicide spray. (exam room chairs, surgical light, electrocautery machine, ect.)

    • Sterilizing surgical equipment by using a shaker and autoclave.

    • Stock and clean exam rooms at the end of each shift. (sweep if needed, remove trash from trash bin)

    • Send/prescribe medications as requested by provider.


  1. Administrative responsibilities:

    • Schedule appointments.

    • Maintain an organized and efficient office environment.

    • Maintain inventory of medical supplies, medications, and equipment.

    • Answer intramail messages from EMA electronic record management system.

      1. Contact and return calls to patients as needed.

    • Reply to administrative emails from corporate domain (@sunwisederm.com).

    • Document all correspondence between SunWise, patient, and any third party. (PCP, pharmacy, pathology lab, caretaker, etc…).

    • Ensure that all patient information is kept confidential and secure.


  1. Patient education responsibilities:

    • Educate patients on their skin condition, treatment options, and expected outcomes as directed by the provider.

    • Educate patients on proper skin care practices, including use of sunscreens, moisturizers, and topical treatments as directed by the provider.

    • Provide patients with instructions on how to use prescribed medications and topical treatments as directed by provider.

    • Answer patient’s questions and address their concerns about their skin condition or treatment as directed by the provider.

You will be expected to work closely with any provider at any SunWise location to provide high-quality care to patients, manage administrative tasks, and educate patients on proper skin care practices. Your work helps ensure that patients receive the support and care they need to maintain healthy skin and manage any skin, hair, or nail conditions they may have.
